Abstract
A method of assay for a growth factor required by L. bifidus of avian origin was developed. The factor is present in small amts. in isolated proteins and animal products, in higher amts. in plant materials, and in highest amts. in fermentation products, yeast and bacterial cultures. The growth factor is not found in concentrates of liver, whey and fish solubles which are potent sources of unidentified chick growth factors. Various procedures for concentrating the growth factor were tried. Approx. 6 to 10-fold increases in activity were obtained in 70% ethanol or 60% ethylene glycol monobutyl ether elutates from norited water extracts of R1 yeast (Pabst) and fish solubles. No definite correlation between growth factor activity for the organism and the chick was found. Keywords
