Abstract
A retrospective review of sedation regimens for pediatric procedures compared Demerol-Phenergan-Thorazine, chloral hydrate, and Nembutal-Demerol. The highest failure rates occurred with CT scans and EEGs. Children with psychomotor retardation or seizure disorders constituted the majority of the failures. Most had augmentation with additional sedative to perform the procedure, though some were rescheduled and successfully sedated with an alternate regimen. No child was sedated to the extent that hospitalization for observation or therapy was required. With some effort by physicians, nurses, parents and technicians, general anesthesia for these procedures can be avoided in virtually all patients. Keywords
