Resistance to Cronartium ribicola in Pinus monticola: short shoot fungicidal reaction

Abstract
Growth of the blister rust (Cronartium ribicola J. C. Fisch. ex Rabenh.) mycelium down a secondary needle of certain resistant Pinus monticola Dougl. seedlings proceeds normally until hyphae reach the short shoot. At this point, a resistance mechanism is triggered that causes host cell necrosis and fungal death. Thus, normal canker development is prevented and the stem remains disease-free.
