Abstract
Aromatic azides with a para-substituent decompose thermally in a mixture of polyphosphoric and a carboxylic acid to give oxazoles, or in some case NO-diacyl o-aminophenols, in good yield. Various aspects of this nitrene mechanism are discussed.Keywords
