Heterotransplantation of Goat Mitral Valves in Dogs

Abstract
Heterotransplantation of the goat mitral valves into dogs was found to be technically feasible in 15 instances and to have a low operative mortality. The majority of the animals died from destruction of the graft within 6 months after insertion. The degree of necrosis and phagocytosis was greater after the insertion of heterografts than after insertion of homografted mitral valves (with and without treatment with Imuran) and autografts. The destructive processes appeared to occur at a rate exceeding the rate of reparative processes so that dehiscence of parts of the grafts occurred. In addition, in those animals that survived long enough for evaluation, fibrosis at the heterograft-host junction seemed to be more prominent than in the case of homografts.
