Abstract
The most significant result to the treatment of spinal tuberculosis with the major antimicrobial agents for one year or more, compared with the earlier series treated with streptomycin alone for 2 to 4 mos., is in the reduction of relapse of associated tuberculous disease and consequent control of tissue infection. No essential change in the spinal disease in terms of the rate of functional recovery, the clinical response, and the mortality from tuberculosis was noted. There were no relapses of the vertebral lesions in the present study. Longer duration of chemotherapy controls associated tuberculous disease prevents complications of existing skeletal disease.
