Amorphous Copper‐Palladium‐Zirconium Ternary Alloys for Formaldehyde Oxidation Anode Materials

Abstract
The electro‐oxidation of and on a series of amorphous Cu‐Pd‐Zr ternary alloys after surface treatments with aq. has been investigated in and at 303 K, together with surface area measurements and XPS observations. The acid treatment led to the formation of a Raney‐type porous Cu‐Pd alloy layer on the surface after the Zr was leached out. The surface analyses indicated a minor degree of enrichment in Pd or Cu, before or after the acid treatment, respectively. The alloy electrodes with the bulk composition of showed the same activity of (true) at 0.30V (RHE) for the and electro‐oxidation in . The composition of 2:1 exhibited similar behavior with the activity of (true) in . No evolution of was detected on the amorphous alloys containing more than 50 atom percent Pd in , although insignificant amounts of hydrogen were absorbed in the electrodes themselves. Hence, one may expect complete oxidation of into and on such alloy electrodes. The oxidation current increased linearly with increase (up to 400) of the electrode roughness factor.
