Abstract
Two trials involving 994 crossbred pigs were conducted in partially slotted floor, enclosed buildings to evaluate effects of number of pigs per pen and of negative air ionization on performance of growing-finishing pigs. In trial 1, group size was either 32 or 16 for the growing phase, and either 16 or eight for the finishing phase. Rate of gain and daily feed consumption were not affected by group size, but in both the growing and finishing phases, gain per unit of feed fed was higher for the smaller group (P<.05). In trial 2, there was no statistically significant difference in pig performance between nonionized and ionized environments. Copyright © 1976. American Society of Animal Science .
