Abstract
To the Editor: The recent article by Sande et al. entitled "Sustained Bacteremia in Patients with Prosthetic Cardiac Valves" (N Engl J Med 286:1067, 1972), brings to this periodontist's mind an unanswered question: the extent to which chronic periodontitis was the source of bacteremia in the cases in which no obvious sources were identified. A median age of 51 years fits the peak of this dental illness. Many of the organisms cultured are common in periodontal exudate and dental plaque. After discussion of this subject with Dr. Sande and others prominent in the cardiovascular surgical field, and from my own . . .This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
