Abstract
In this note we respond to comments made by Van Loosdrecht and colleagues regarding our unifying hypothesis for biofilm formation. We concur with much of what the authors state; however, we remain of the opinion that substrate concentration is the most important of the many factors that influence the structure of a biofilm. Keywords
