Abstract
This study of Cuterebra parasitic on the deermouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) refutes some previous hypotheses of why infested Peromyscus appear to survive longer than healthy mice. This phenomenon is solely the result of mice that remain on the plot longer having a longer exposure to the infestation and hence a greater incidence of attack. This contention is supported by the incidence of infestation per month being the same in transients and residents even though residents had a greater overall degree of infestation. The similar incidence of infestation per month also indicates that the fly lays its eggs in such a way that neither transients nor residents are favored to contact the infestation, a result that is compatible with the observations of several workers on botfly oviposition habits. Keywords
