Abstract
Agriculture is defined as the science or art of cultivating the soil, producing crops, and raising livestock. This definition implies the manipulation of soil, plants, and animals from their natural state. In reviewing the pest situation in changing agricultural systems, we are not contrasting disturbed vs. undisturbed ecosystems, but we are comparing different types of artificial ecosystems or agroecosystems. I have further taken the liberty of limiting my comments to the crop sector of agriculture, chiefly because my own experience and familiarity with the literature is largely limited to this area. Keywords
