Abstract
Vascular responses to norepinephrine were determined in normal dogs and in dogs with adrenal insufficiency. Changes in vascular resistance as calculated from pressure/flow ratios were used as an index of vascular reactivity. Blood pressure and flow were measured directly in the femoral artery in the anesthetized animals. A series of graded doses (0.01, 0.05, 0.10 [mu]g/kg) of norepinephrine were injected intra-arterially in each animal. Nine control and 12 adrenalectomized dogs were studied in the above manner, both before and 2 hr after the intravenous injection of either hydrocortisone or control solvent. Adrenalectomized dogs were studied 3 days after complete adrenalectomy at which time both clinical and chemical (serum electrolytes) findings indicated a state of adrenal insufficiency. There was no significant impairment in the responses of the adrenalectomized dogs to norepinephrine as indicated by changes in vascular resistance. Keywords
