The Stereospecificity of 3α- and 12α-Bile Salt Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Systems from Four Microbial Sources

Abstract
5ß-Cholanoates, having a hydroxyl group in the 3α and 3ß and/or 12α and 12ß configurations, were tested as substrates for two preparation of 3α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSDH) and two preparations of 12a-HSDH. When the 3-OH group was in the a configuration, both 3α-HSDH preparations reacted, but when it was in the ß configuration, neither 3α-HSDH preparations reacted. This also held true for the 12α-HSDH preparations.
