Gnomonia leptostyla: Growth, Sporulation, and Heterothallism

Abstract
Optimal growth of G. leptostyla [Juglans nigra anthracnose pathogen] occurred at 22.degree. C and pH 5.4, and sporulation at 26.degree. C and at pH 6.8 on oatmeal agar. Light reduced vegetative growth, but promoted production of conidia and acervuli. Fertile perithecia were produced in vitro after incubating crosses of 2 mating types in darkness at 10.degree. C for up to 3 mo. The optimum temperatures for germination of ascospores and conidia were 26 and 24.degree. C, respectively. Microconidia were not produced above 10.degree. C, and did not germinate.
