Abstract
A heavy-ion-beam probe has been used to measure the space-potential distribution on the Elmo bumpy torus. The results indicate that under optimum confinement conditions the ambipolar electric field is nearly axisymmetric, points radially inward, and is of sufficient magnitude to dominate the ion poloidal drifts. Keywords
