Abstract
The Hamiltonian for a diamagnetic molecule rotating in a magnetic field is derived in spherical tensor form and is shown to contain terms both linear and quadratic in magnetic field. The matrix elements of this Hamiltonian are derived, and the constants appearing in these matrix elements are related to the molecular quadrupole moment tensor. It is shown that the effect of a magnetic field on the rotational spectrum of a molecule should provide a way of measuring molecular quadrupole moments.
