Idiopathic acute fatty liver of pregnancy: subsequent uncomplicated pregnancy

Abstract
Summary Idiopathic fatty liver of pregnancy causing hepatic and renal failure is uncommon, and the incidence of maternal mortality and fetal wastage is very high, reported as 80 per cent and 74 per cent respectively by Hoyumpa et al. (1975) in a survey of 50 cases. In patients who survived, the fatty change resolved completely, and no long term sequelae were noted. The risk that fatty liver will recur when survivors become pregnant again is not known.
