XIPAMID IN THE TREATMENT OF OEDEMA IN RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Abstract
Nineteen women and one man with severe oedema of the legs complicating rheumatoid arthritis were given tablets of placebo, frusemide, and xipamid in random sequence. Judged by change in body weight and limb circumference the two diuretics were effective in controlling leg oedema. An average body weight decrease of 697 g. followed frusemide 40 mg./day, and one of 1, 583 g. followed xipamid 40 g./day. Most of this weight has appeared to be in the form of fluid lost from the legs, helping the patients' mobility and the ease of obtaining comfortable shoes. Backed by potassium supplements, xipamid and frusemide are helpful in the treatment of oedema in rheumatoid arthritis.
