The Family Conference

Abstract
In this article I look at the family conference as an institutional context wherein professional caregivers and family members negotiate select aspects of the life course of their clients or relatives. Observational data on family conferences were obtained in a physical rehabilitation hospital and two nursing homes. It is argued that in these and similar institutional contexts, the course of a person's life is not simply presented and assessed but is also processed and controlled by persons who have a stake in what is discovered and decided.
