Abstract
The general quantum-mechanical extension of Luttinger and Tisza's approach to the ground state of crystals with dipole-dipole and exchange interactions is given. It is shown that within this approach the ground state can only be ferro- or antiferromagnetic if the unit cell contains only one or two magnetically equivalent atoms or ions. Keywords
