Abstract
The equations for the small oscillations of a uniform suspension chain are intractable. The writer, seeking direct expressions for the natural frequencies of such a chain and guided by the results of some elementary oscillation experiments, presents a simple approximate theory of the oscillations. Its results are compared with those deduced by Routh for a cycloidal chain. Some semi-empirical formulae for the first three natural frequencies are then put forward and comparison is made with experiment.
