Abstract
Residual sulfur levels in final annealed 0.014‐in.‐thick ring samples of moly‐permalloy were varied by two methods. In one method vacuum or argon was used for part of the final anneal instead of the usual dry hydrogen. Sulfur levels varied between 5 and 25 ppm but at the same time there was a large variation in residual carbon content. In the second method heats were melted with different sulfur contents resulting in variations in residual sulfur after final hydrogen anneal. Carbon was consistently low. Sulfur impurity has a very potent effect on low induction permeability, much more so than carbon. The μ40 G decreases by about 4000 for each ppm residual sulfur up to 10 ppm. Coercive force is also severely affected, increasing by a factor of four in the range 3–10‐ppm sulfur. Properties continue to deteriorate with greater than 10‐ppm sulfur but at a reduced rate.
