Abstract
This article offers a critique of gifted education as well as a perspective on future directions. The author discusses two issues from the past that have hindered the development of the field, two issues that reflect problems in gifted education today, and a perspective on the future. The future of gifted education will depend on a new paradigm for conceptualizing giftedness. This paradigm is seen to come from developmental psychology and will attend to affective development as well as cognitive development. Keywords
