Micronodular Phlebosclerosis

Abstract
A peculiar nodular fibromyomatous structure protruding Into the lumlna of the venules In sections of the normal part of a kidney with angiomyolipoma was observed. These lesions referred to as micronodular phlebosclerosls were searched for In the organs of 100 consecutive autopsies; they were present only In sections of the kidneys and adrenal glands. A study of the latter organs, of 5 age groups (a total of 350 cases), was carried out. Mlcronodular phlebosclerosls is not present at the time of birth, and it gradually increases in number and frequency as age advances. Microscopic examination of 1000 sections of 100 adrenals from 50 newborns confirmed the lack of these lesions at the time of birth. Rheumatic heart disease, arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease and malignant tumors were frequently found in association with mlcronodular phlebosclerosls. The hlstogenesis of such lesions and their confinement to the adrenal glands and kidneys remain unknown.
