Abstract
One of the most remarkable facts about persistent viral infections is that they persist at all—that they escape immune surveillance and the infected cells are not destroyed. Such viruses can eventually cause disease without any apparent cytopathology. Studies indicate that in these cases pathology may result from a delayed immunologic response and perhaps physiologic deletions. Keywords
