Abstract
Health care providers need to be educated in ethnic and cultural health issues. Many have been trained using norms regarding health and illness. When a health care provider interacts with a person from a culture with differing norms, there is often a conflict of beliefs. The health care provider must develop a sensitivity to the personal fundamental values of others regarding their health and illness. This sensitivity may enable the health care provider to be instrumental in meeting the needs of the consumer in a collaborative, safe, and professional manner. Keywords
