Abstract
Phytohemagglutinin-stimulated human peripheral blood lymphocytes grown in vitro have a requirement for serine and glycine. Glycine partially relieves the requirement and serine totally relieves it. The extent of the requirement depends on the cell density of the culture. Phytohemagglutinin-stimulated lymphocytes utilize much greater amounts of serine for macromolecular synthesis than do unstimulated lymphocytes. This system can be used for testing chemotherapeutic agents which selectively inhibit the growth of leukemic cells by restricting the supply of serineavailable to them. Keywords
