Effect of "apparent" instructions on brightness judgments.

Abstract
An experiment using 30 Ss showed that under nonreduced viewing conditions judgments varied significantly depending upon whether S was instructed to judge in terms of reflectance, luminance or "apparent brightness." Some Ss in the apparent instruction group responded consistently in a fashion unlike that of the other 2 groups. The mean apparent judgment is not an artifact caused by some Ss responding in terms of reflectance and others in terms of luminance. Nor is there evidence that any S vacillated between these 2 criteria when making apparent brightness judgments.
