An Extinct Shrew from the Early Pleistocene of South Africa

Abstract
A new species of crocidurine shrew, Diplomesodon fossorius, has been found in the australopithecine deposits of South Africa. This species has the most specialized dental and mandibular structures known in the subfamily. It is early Pleistocene in age and is most closely related to the living Diplomesodon pulchellum of south-central U.S.S.R. rather than to shrews now living in Africa.
