Abstract
To the Editor: The paper, "Frequency of Negative Intermediate-Strength Tuberculin Sensitivity in Patients with Active Tuberculosis," by Holden, et al. (N Engl J Med 285:1506–1509, 1971) is both important and timely. As I pointed out in a letter in the July 29, 1971, issue of the Journal, the teaching that failure to elicit a reaction with intermediate-strength PPD (5 TU) can be used to exclude the presence of active tuberculosis is not consistent with the facts. Our experience parallels that of Holden et al.: most commercially available intermediate-strength PPD will fail to elicit a reaction in a substantial proportion . . .
