Acquaintance Links Between Residents of a High Rise Building: An Application of the “Small World” Method

Abstract
Milgram's “small world” method was adapted to trace the acquaintance pattern of residents in a high-rise complex. Seventeen residents were given chain-booklets, with instructions to advance these through their social networks in the building. Six chains progressed beyond the “starter,” and the pattern of their circulation was consistent with the hypothesis that proximity is a major determinant of social interaction in high-rise settings.
