Abstract
An evaporation technique has been developed to allow thin (approx. 200 Å thick) detached single crystal films of gold to be prepared. These films are very coherent and uniform in thickness. Dislocation lines are observed in these films with a density of 1010-1011/cm2 The dielocations may be observed to move inside the electron microscope. A prominent feature of the movement is the occurrence of wide ribbons of stacking fault due to the splitting of a dislocation in to two partial dislocations. Cross-slip is observed also. Annealing of the films has produced some regular arrays of dislocations, including hexagonal networks and arrays at low angle boundaries. Small loops are also found in some of the films and are interpreted as dislocation loops resulting from the collapse of discs of vacancies. Keywords
