Amphipoda Gammaridea from the deep Norwegian Sea. A preliminary report

Abstract
The amphipod fauna of the Norwegian abyssal plains has a low diversity. About 30 species have been found and general faunal composition indicates that they represent the majority of species occuring in the area. The number of species would then be 20 % or less than that found in corresponding areas in the North Atlantic. Some of the species occur in great abundance. Endemism at the species level is high. The degree of affinity with the North Atlantic deep basins is low, while, on the other hand, connexions with the High Boreal and Arctic shelf and upper slope faunas are fairly close. The general impression is that the abyssal amphipod fauna is of comparatively recent origin.
