Abstract
A new formulation is presented for the deformation of a rigid, ideally plastic cantilever beam with an attached tip mass under impact loading at its tip. The effects due to arbitrarily large displacements are rigorously taken into account. The results are compared with Parkes’ solution2 in which the geometry changes are neglected. Comparisons with experiments3, 4 show that neglect of the geometry changes is responsible for part of the discrepancies between Parkes’ theory and the experiments. Keywords
