Ionizing Radiation and Bacteria: Nature of the Effect of Irradiated Medium

Abstract
The experiments described have been aimed at explaining the effect of irradiated medium on Escherichia coli bacterial cells. These effects have been previously reported from both this laboratory and others. These experiments show that the effect on bacterial cells is due to hydrogen peroxide generated in the medium and that the nature of the action is to inhibit the synthetic processes of the cell. The duration of this inhibition is dependent on the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the medium. We have shown further that the interaction between cells and hydrogen peroxide is much stronger if the cells are living and much less if the peroxide is exposed to cell contents.
