Abstract
It has been attempted to show how complex are the factors which a matron must take into account when deploying her nursing staff. Facts and figures taken from geriatric wards have been given to show that the work in the geriatric wards is heavier and more demanding than it is in a surgical ward. It is concluded that in any general hospital which includes an active geriatric unit, the geriatric wards need more staff than any other.
