Abstract
More than 10 years have passed since the first successful human heart transplantation.1 After an initial flurry of excitement, and widespread trial in many centers, recurrent failures led to disillusionment and virtual abandonment of the procedure, in all but one or two institutions. Since 1970 the vast majority of transplants in this country have been carried out in the experimental program under the direction of Shumway and his surgical and medical colleagues at Stanford.
