A Cytopathogenic Effect of Influenza Virus (PR-8 Strain) for Mouse Fibroblastic (L) Cells In Vitro

Abstract
Summary: A lytic action of influenza A virus (PR-8) for L cells in vitro has been demonstrated which occurs only with large amounts of infectious virus. This action of the virus involves attachment, penetration, and a limited form of viral replication which results in the production of relatively large amounts of viral hemagglutinin but very small quantities of infectious virus which manifests no increased ability to replicate in L cells. This lytic action shows a close relationship in its sensitivity to ultraviolet light to the infectious property of the virus.
