Abstract
The general expression for the slow-neutron cross section of a molecule is cast in a form which allows an explicit formulation of the assumption, that the duration of the collision is short compared to the natural periods of the molecule. It is shown that the assumption allows one to extend Placzek's results to molecules containing light nuclei, with only minor modifications. The limits of validity of the assumption are discussed, and the possibilities of exceptions are studied in detail on some examples. Keywords
