Case 12

Abstract
A 38-year-old man reported the presence of an enlarged thyroid of constant size since childhood. In 1973 further enlargement rapidly occurred, with the development of a palpable nodule in the left thyroid lobe. There were no symptoms pointing toward thyroid or parathyroid dysfunction (e.g., skeletal complaints). The thyroid nodule, however, displayed decreased radioactive iodine uptake. A radical thyroidectomy was performed and the surgical specimen included a 2.5 X 1.5 cm orange-brown tumor in the right thyroid lobe surrounded by a fibrous capsule.
