Abstract
The mitotic cycle of Saprolegnia (fungus) was analyzed by quantitative EM following synchronization with fluorodeoxyuridine (FdUnd). One group of kinetochore microtubules (.apprx. 42; 2n = 42) separates into 2 (.apprx. 21 each) during G1 and remains through S and G2. At the onset of mitosis they reorientate, elongate and, during metaphase, a new population forms to produce amphitelic pairs (.apprx. 42/half-spindle). FdUnd-blocked nuclei have enlarged nucleoli and undergo slow (2.5 h vs. normal 1 h), decreasingly synchronous, nuclear cycles during recovery from the drug. Calculated normal cycle times (min) are: G1, 33; S, 7; G2, 10; M, 12.5.This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
