Abstract
The ground state properties and low-lying excitations of a one-dimensional system of interacting bosons with open boundary conditions are studied. Haldane's harmonic fluid description is generalized to this case. Ground state correlation functions are evaluated accounting for finite size and boundary effects. The momentum distribution at small momenta is obtained from the one-particle density-matrix, and a method to extract the characteristic exponent from the experiment is proposed. A Bijl-Jastrow wave function for the ground state of this system is also derived.
