Abstract
Thirty-three normal persons were examined to establish the normal variation of MPD with age. Three patients with thyrotoxic myopathy were examined and the recovery rate was followed. The 2 patients treated by operation recovered normal muscle power and MPD in about 5 weeks; the patient treated medically recovered in about 7 weeks. Two patients with hypercorticism were examined, one with a tumor of the right adrenal and the other receiving predniso-lone therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. Both recovered normal muscle power and MPD about twelve weeks after adrenalectomy or reduction in the dose of prednisolone. Six patients with evidence of a steroid myopathy were followed for twenty weeks while taking part in a double-blind trial of the effect of anabolic steroid therapy. In no case could any beneficial effect be demonstrated. Keywords
