XCVII. The elastic scattering of neutrons by alpha particles

Abstract
The theory of the scattering of neutrons by alpha particles is formulated using the variational method. It is assumed that the five-body wave function can be written in the Wheeler resonating group form and allowance is made for possible two-body spin orbit coupling. Detailed numerical calculations of the S-wave phase shifts for incident neutrons below 7 mev, and of the zero energy cross section, are presented for two-body potentials having the exchange properties of an ordinary, a Majorana-Heisenberg exchange, a symmetrical exchange and a Serber interaction. Comparison of the theoretical results with experimental data strongly favours forces of the Majorana-Heisenberg or symmetrical exchange type against those of the ordinary and Serber types.
