Abstract
The cytokinin levels of butanol and aqueous extracts of proximal portions of Streptocarpus leaves showed very little change during the summer and early autumn months, whereas those of the distal portions changed markedly. These changes appear to be closely related to the formation of abscission layers and the subsequent senescence of the distal part of the leaves. It is postulated that the increase in butanol-soluble cytokinins during January may induce abscission, while the decrease in February appears to be directly related to senescence of the distal portions of the leaves.
