Abstract
Measurements of the critical partial pressure of SiO, Pc, required for the initiation of avalanche nucleation, as a function of ambient temperature in the system Mg–SiO–H2 have been obtained over the temperature range 750<T<1015 K. These are compared to similar measurements of Pc for the SiO–H2 system. It is found that the presence of magnesium lowers the partial pressure of SiO required to initiate avalanche nucleation in the Mg–SiO–H2 system for T≲925 K, but does not effect the onset of condensation at the higher temperatures. Keywords
