Abstract
One possible explanation for the failure to detect neutrinos emitted from the solar interior is that the core of the sun may be in a temporarily expanded state. If so, the solar luminosity is currently much less than its normal value, which may account for the fact that the earth is now in the middle of a major glacial period. The astrophysical background of this situation is described, and the terrestrial consequences are discussed. Keywords
