Abstract
A literature review showed a lack of accurate data for upper limb joint forces. After discussing methods to determine muscle forces, the physiological cross-sections of muscles were used to estimate their strengths. Elbow joint forces were predicted for isometric actions which gave severe loading conditions. The predicted forces were discussed in relation to prosthesis design, and the use of a radial head replacement was recommended. Keywords
