Abstract
This paper surveys the state of the art in the design and evaluation of multiprocessing systems. Multiprocessor architectures of the SIMD and MIMD type are reviewed and further classified depending on their tight or loose coupling and their homogeneity. The additional complexity of the software for control, synchronization, efficient utilization, and performance monitoring of multiple processors is emphasized. Keywords
